HARU

WHY
Why 'HARU'
01 · STARTING POINT
02 · Story Arc
03 · Explore Korea
Pick a festival and its story appears here.
Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival
Drill a hole in the frozen river, sit down on the ice, and wait for a mountain trout to pass beneath you. Braver visitors wade in to catch them bare-handed, then grill what they caught right there on the bank. It is one of the few places where you can walk out onto the middle of a river and find the whole town already there.
Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival
The festival is held on the Jeongok-ri site itself, where Korea's first Acheulean hand-axe was found. You knap stone tools, build a fire and try a prehistoric hunt until a textbook chapter turns into something in your hands. The best part is that adults are exactly as clumsy at it as children.
Gangneung Danoje Festival
For a thousand years Gangneung has kept the Dano rites — the shaman ritual, the masked Gwanno play — on the banks of the Namdaecheon. Wash your hair in iris water, take a turn on the swing, drift over to the ssireum ring, and it stops feeling like a festival and starts feeling like a town's oldest habit. It is inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Pyeongchang Trout Festival
In Korea's largest trout-producing valley you fish through the ice of the Odaecheon Stream yourself. Whatever you land is served on the spot, raw or grilled, while ice sleds and snow play run the length of the bank. Ringed by mountains, it is the kind of place where a whole winter day disappears without your noticing.
Seoul Lantern Festival
Every November, hanji paper lanterns float in a long line down the Cheonggyecheon Stream. You are in the middle of the city, yet only water and light remain, and your pace slows without your deciding to. Hang a wish on one lantern and the Seoul night you walk through every day looks different on the way home.
Bupyeong Pungmul Festival
Pungmul troupes come from all over the country and march down Bupyeong's main street behind gongs and drums. When the procession passes, the sound bounces between the buildings and arrives in your chest rather than your ears. The line between performer and onlooker does not survive very long.
Siheung Gaetgol Festival
The festival lands when the reeds are rustling over Gyeonggi-do's only inland tidal wetland. You rake salt by hand in the old salt pans and crouch over whatever is living in the mudflat, and half a day is simply gone. The first surprise is that a wetland like this survives at all this close to Seoul.
Jeongseon Arirang Festival
You hear Jeongseon Arirang in the valley it came from, ringed by mountains on every side. The melody is slow and long-drawn — the first time, it sounds less like a song than like someone telling you something. Singing contests and the raftmen's Arari carry it through a mountain autumn.
Incheon Pentaport Music Festival
Three days of rock across an open field in Songdo every August. International and Korean bands trade off on the stages, and when it rains people simply keep jumping in the mud — that image has been part of the festival for years. Three days of getting through summer by sound rather than by sight.
Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival
The UNESCO-listed Hwaseong Fortress and its detached palace become the stage for a re-enactment of King Jeongjo's royal procession. Horses, a military band and hundreds of marchers come through the fortress gate while you watch from the roadside. Walk the ramparts afterwards and it is easy to feel you stepped into the wrong century.
Anseong Namsadang Baudeogi Festival
Anseong was home base for the Namsadang, Joseon's travelling performance troupes, and here you watch a tightrope walker trade jokes with the crowd from high above the ground. It is named for Baudeogi, the first woman ever to lead such a troupe, so the story stays firmly attached to a person. Percussion, spinning plates and rope-walking, one after another with no gap.
Eumseong Pumba Festival
Pumba — the wandering beggars' song — fills the market square, performed by players in rags who turn hardship into satire. You laugh because it is funny, and then realise the song has been about sharing the whole time. It is a loud, boisterous day that somehow leaves you warmer on the way home.
Andong International Mask Dance Festival
Andong is the home of the Hahoe byeolsingut, the masked play where rank and face came off along with your own features. Troupes from Korea and abroad take the stage in turn, and the audience can put on a mask and join straight in. You get to watch a game about turning the social order upside down still working.
Sejong Hangeul Festival
Around Hangeul Day, Sejong Lake Park fills up with letters. A Hangeul playground, a Hangeul singing contest and a drone show that draws characters in the sky turn twenty-four letters into a day's worth of games. It is held in the city named after the king who invented them, which is the whole point of where it is.
Cheongsong Apple Festival
Cheongsong apples grow in a mountain basin with a wide day-to-night temperature swing, and here you pick them straight off the tree. Apple everything, a ssireum ring and a singing contest make it a proper country fair. You come away convinced that mountain autumn air and this apple taste the same.
Daejeon Zero O'clock Festival
The old downtown boulevard in front of Daejeon Station is closed to traffic and handed over to people walking until midnight. Recreated period streetscapes, night markets and stages run end to end, and the crowd only grows as the night gets later. You get to see what happens when a city decides not to go to sleep for a few days.
Boryeong Mud Festival
The fun starts the moment you stop caring about being covered head to toe in mud. It comes from Boryeong's own tidal flats; you slide in it, wrestle in it, and you are laughing with strangers about ten minutes in. The sea is right there for whenever you decide to be clean again.
Nonsan Strawberry Festival
In Korea's main strawberry-growing district you pick them yourself and eat them where you stand. A strawberry parade goes past, the stalls sell everything the fruit can possibly become, and you spend the entire day eating red. Spring arrives on your tongue here before it arrives anywhere else.
Geumsan World K-Insam Festival
In the town at the centre of Korea's ginseng trade, you go into the field and dig the roots up yourself. Ginseng fritters, ginseng makgeolli — things that are hard to find anywhere else — line the stalls until a single root has filled your entire day. For a few days the whole market smells of it.
Daegu Chimaek Festival
A city known for long, punishing summers meets the heat head-on by covering Duryu Park in fried chicken and cold beer. The chicken brands that started in Daegu set up side by side, and wherever you sit on the grass you end up talking to whoever is next to you. By evening the whole park has become one long outdoor table.
Gimje Horizon Festival
Gimje sits on a plain flat enough to show a true horizon, and the festival is held at Byeokgolje in the middle of it. Flying a kite and cutting rice between fields gone gold, the word 'horizon' stops being an abstraction for the first time. You can also walk the embankment of a reservoir built in the Three Kingdoms period.
Goryeong Daegaya Festival
Beneath the round burial mounds ridging the hills of Jisan-dong, the festival brings the Daegaya kingdom back to the surface. You hear the gayageum, shape clay pots and hammer iron, and a kingdom that usually gets one line between Silla and Baekje suddenly has a texture. It feels like spending a day inside a footnote.
Ulsan Whale Festival
Jangsaengpo was a whaling station; today it is the port you leave from to go and look at whales instead. Walk the whale culture village, take the whale-watching boat out, and you can see how a city made its peace with the sea. It is also the story of a neighbourhood that changed its entire line of work.
Miryang Arirang Festival
For one weekend, Miryang Arirang runs all day along the riverbank. A rite for the legend of Lady Arang, riverside stages and a street parade — a single song pulling an entire city through a day. Of Korea's three great Arirang this is the brisk, defiant one, and it sounds different sung where it was born.
Ulsan Onggi Festival
Oegosan is a village where onggi potters still live and work, and the festival puts you at the wheel with your hands in the clay. You throw a jar of your own and then watch the wood kiln take fire. The vessel that fermented Korea's kimchi and soy paste stops being a museum object and becomes something you made badly.
Sunchang Fermented Food Festival
In the village Korea knows for gochujang, you boil and pound soybeans into meju blocks and mix a batch of chilli paste yourself. What you make goes home with you in a tub. It is a hands-on lesson in the fact that fermentation is mostly waiting — taught with your hands rather than explained.
Dongnaeeupseong History Festival
Dongnae Fortress, where the first battle of the Imjin War was fought, restages that day on the ground where it happened. The magistrate's procession winds through the neighbourhood, and the fall of the fortress is performed as a musical against the walls themselves. You meet the Busan that once stood as the country's first line, from inside it.
Gwangalli Eobang Festival
The festival takes its name from eobang, the fishing guilds of Joseon's coastal navy villages — so on Gwangalli's sand you haul nets and catch fish with your hands. Grill what you caught, look up, and the Gwangan Bridge is standing right there. For a weekend the fishing village Busan used to be comes back onto a downtown beach.
Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival
Lanterns of every size cover the Namgang River in front of Jinjuseong Fortress. The custom began as a military measure — floating lights to block a river crossing — so there is a battle underneath all that beauty. Float a wish lantern, cross the pontoon bridge, and nothing is left but water and light.
Chungjang Street Festival of Recollection
Chungjang-ro, Gwangju's oldest shopping street, is turned back to an earlier decade in its entirety. People rent old school uniforms and walk between period signboards, and even a first-time visitor ends up borrowing somebody else's memory for an afternoon. For a few days the street itself is the stage.
Busan International Rock Festival
Stages go up on the riverside lawns of Samnak Eco Park and you sit facing bands with the Nakdong River at their backs. The crowd runs wide enough that the front row and the back row are different generations, and once the sun drops the river wind comes straight across the grass. A few days when Busan is crowded with music.
Jinhae Gunhangje Festival
For a short stretch each spring, Jinhae disappears under cherry blossom. Stand on the bridge over Yeojwacheon and the branches meet overhead into a tunnel; the same week it breaks out along the old Gyeonghwa railway tracks and through the naval port streets. You get to walk through the few days when an ordinary city turns entirely into scenery.
Gwangju Kimchi Festival
In the city that carries the reputation of Jeolla cooking, you make kimchi with your own hands. A competition comparing regional styles runs alongside a kimchi market, and it is startling how differently one word can taste. Whatever you make is wrapped up for you to take home.
Busan Fireworks Festival
Take a spot on Gwangalli beach and the Gwangan Bridge itself becomes the stage. Fireworks pour off the bridge deck while the water throws the whole thing back, so sky and sea go off at the same time. People come from across the country for this one night.
Hampyeong Butterfly Festival
Butterflies are released over fields of rape blossom and poppies, and they go where they like. Stand still long enough and one will land on your hand or your shoulder — the waiting turns out to be better than the photograph. It is a quiet festival, but watching spring move in front of you stays with you.
Yeongam Wangin Culture Festival
Yeongam was the home of Wangin, the Baekje scholar who carried classical learning to Japan, and the festival opens with the cherry road under Wolchulsan Mountain in bloom. Walking behind the Wangin procession, you see what it looks like for a town to remember one person for fifteen centuries. Blossom and an old story, side by side, at walking pace.
Boseong Green Tea Festival
The festival lands when Boseong's terraced tea fields have turned their palest, brightest green. You pick the leaves, roast them by hand, then drink what you made looking out over the rows you picked it from. Until the day ends, nothing but green comes into your field of vision.
Jeju Fire Festival
The festival comes from Jeju's old grazing custom of burning off dead grass before the cattle went back out. After dark the fire is set and an entire flank of Saebyeol Oreum burns at once, in front of you. Wind and firelight and nothing else — there is no other place you can stand and watch this.
04 · Festival Experience
05 · One Story, Different Depth
Same Scene · Same Response Point

07 · Character Progression
08 · Live Experience

11 · Learning
